Water purifying, water treatment zeolite application
Zeolites have the property of give and imbibe water and also give and adsorb matters, exchange cations. The structure of a mineral is in pores size defined 2-15angstrem, that not allows to enter ion exchange with helpful matters – amino acid, vitamins, squirrels, polyunsaturated fatty acid. The exchange reaction happens only with small ions of micro and macro elements and compounding (hydrogen sulfide, methane, heavy metals, and radionuclides). Herein its key difference from other sorbents. That’s why it is named «live stone».
Natural zeolite is proof against high temperature and corrosion environment. The zeolite has strong sorbing properties. It acts as a mechanical filter and as ion exchanger has sufficiently great capacity and wide spectrum of effect concerning heavy metal and radioactive elements, sorbs bacterium and viruses, decreasing total bacterial count and in some cases (up to 96%) completely extracts bacterial cells. The zeolite purifies water from harmful elements such as: Heavy metals, Chemicals, Pesticides, ТRadioactive elements, Phenol, Organic pollutants, Ammonium, Nitrates, Bacterium, Oil products, Ammonia, Viruses, Pathogenic microorganisms.
As well as the zeolite impoverishes chloride ion, fluoride ion, removes hardness salts, increases PH of water. The zeolite fertilizes (ionizes) water such elements as calcium, potassium and magnesium. These microelements are beneficial for cardiovascular system, especially for cerebral cortex, to strength walls of blood vessels. It is found that upon contact with water the zeolitic stock alkalifies it. Water hardness vastly reduces, as a result drinking water softens and tasty for drinking. Herewith (it is critical to) scum of heavy remainder on electro kettle is absent. Water fine cleaning technology developed by St. Petersburg Research and Development Establishment of Community facilities Academy is based on natural zeolite use as a sorbent combined with water draft continuous recirculation on water purification first stage construction.
The use of zeolites sorption properties improves the effect of soluble impurities and organic compound removing.
Thus, the content of residual aluminum is reduced on 20-44%, chlororganic compound on 46-64% (by chloroform) phenol – 63-83%.
There is also impoverishment of heavy metals ions in source water: lead on 94%, cuprum on 64-80%, zinc on 16,7-27,8%, ferrum on 85,7%, chrome on 74-76%, cadmium on 40%.
Zeolites practical use industrially is executed by JSC«Mosvodokanal», Moscow with the purpose of water filtration. According to water purification station the use of zeolites instead of sand permits to increase filtration volume in 1,5 – 2 times and increase dirt-holding capacity on 20-50%.
Predominant features of zeolite load in comparison with sand is that zeolite apparent density in water id lower than quartz in 1,5-2 times, that essentially improves the filter washing at smaller speed of washing solution. At the same time, the zeolite’s density is enough when slick filtration with no load separation when filtration, this is most important when slick separation.
Zeolite filters loading instead of silica sand improves filtration on 30% with simultaneous acceleration and filtration continuance on 20-50%.
Wastewater treatment
Actual natural zeolite is one of new, modern solutions in wastewater treatment from various pollutions. When effluent treatment from tall oil, amine, petrochemical products and other organic pollution it showed a special efficiency.
Especially destructive in waste water is ammonium nitrogen, which concentration overrun is equal to poison presence , fatal for all flesh, including fishes.
For fish wealth saving Japan spends from 2400 to 4800 tons of zeolites (cost of $100 to $200 per ton) annually for its dispersion in intertidal zone, where there is a fish spawning. Thus, $0,5 million is annually thrown out and this is fully justified.
Agricultural and industrial waste clearing and airborne emission is one of the important fields of zeolites application all over the world.
Clinoptilolite ion - exchange properties data suggest that they can be used for large cations concentration and separation of alkaline, alki- earth and some other metals.
The zeolites are used for:
- In drinking and household and industrial plumbing systems;
- In water treating for heat and power factories (previous water purification);
- Industrial waste water on clearing and to clearing;
- Biologically cleaned urban waste water on clearing and to clearing;
- At previous clearing in ion exchange cycles of water purification.
The zeolite is fully functional when it is required:
- Heavy metals removal from industrial waste water with zeolites;
- Viruses, cyanide, westrosol and emulsified oil products;
- Defluorination
- Phenol removal
- Tall oil and amine removal
